Heritage Refurbishment in Aberdare | Bryn Sion Chapel
Honouring the Past, Future-Proofing the Future
We’re proud to share a behind-the-scenes look at our latest heritage refurbishment in Aberdare – the iconic Bryn Sion Chapel.
This isn’t just another building site. It’s the careful restoration of a beloved community landmark, carried out with sensitivity, respect, and pride.
Currently in the rip-out phase, our team is preparing the chapel for a new chapter – one that balances modern comfort with historic character, all delivered the Kelray Way.
HERITAGE REFURBISHMENT IN ABERDARE – PROGRESS UPDATE
Accessible and Inviting for Everyone
We’re constructing a new stone ramp and landing at the front, finished in traditional capping stone. Discreet LED lighting will enhance both safety and ambiance. The existing gates, posts, and railings are being carefully restored and refitted to preserve the building’s character.
Restoring Historic Railings
The signature perimeter railings are being rubbed down, repaired, and repainted to maintain their original look while ensuring long-term durability and visual appeal.
State-of-the-Art Heating and Cooling
We’re installing a sustainable air source heating and cooling system, fully integrated beneath a breathable limecrete floor. This setup provides energy-efficient warmth in winter and cooling in summer — while preserving the health of the original structure.
Breathable Heritage Flooring
Throughout the chapel, we’re laying breathable, heritage-sensitive carpet. It offers warmth, softness, and moisture regulation — combining comfort with conservation.
Reinstating Traditional Wall Panelling
Missing timber matchboard panelling is being reinstated using carefully sourced materials that match the original. This ensures continuity and respect for the building’s historic interior.
Rear Roof Rebuild with Traditional Detailing
We’re completely reconstructing the lean-to roof at the rear of the chapel, using timber and leadwork with traditional drips and rainwater goods — for both beauty and watertightness.
A Brighter, More Welcoming Entrance
New hardwood, fully glazed front doors and a matching internal screen are being installed. They maximise natural light while maintaining privacy, warmth, and acoustic separation — perfectly blending old and new.
Electrical and Infrastructure Upgrades
All electrical systems are being brought up to modern standards, including a new three-phase sub-main, hidden service channels, and additional sockets for future functionality.
THE DETAILS THAT MATTER
Kelray is known for attention to detail — and Bryn Sion Chapel is no exception. Alongside major works, we’re delivering:
- ✅ Stained glass restoration and lobby tiling
- ✅ A new footpath for safer side access
- ✅ Decorative finishes chosen in consultation with the chapel
- ✅ Skirting designs that allow for hidden ventilation and service voids
MODERN COMFORT. HISTORIC CHARACTER.
At Bryn Sion Chapel, we’re not just building — we’re preserving a legacy. Every layer, fixture, and fitting is installed with purpose and care.
This is how heritage refurbishment in Aberdare should be done.
